For people to visit your website, it needs to be displayed over the internet. For a website to be displayed over the internet it needs to be hosted on a computer. This hosting is what is referred to as website hosting. Confused? Well try to explain it a little here.
Think in terms of holding a large event such as a seminar. You want people to come, but in order for this to happen, you need to have some place where you can hold the event. In most cases this will be a conference hall. You pay the owners of the hall for the privilege of holding your seminar on their premises.
The same holds true for websites and website hosting. There are companies which are setup to host websites, with computers dedicated to this one task. In effect, the company provides their computers as hosts to people who are looking to display their websites.
Think of the company as the people who own the conference hall, and the host computer as the conference hall itself. Your website is the seminar that is going to be held in the conference hall.
These host computers are also known as servers and they work 24 hours a day to provide you with a reliable service. Each of these servers have been assigned a unique IP address. This makes it easier for visiting computers to contact the servers and find out if they have the website information that is being requested.
The way these hosting servers work can be seen at any given time when someone navigates through the internet. A good example is simply trying to go to a specific address such as www.mywebsite.com. You type in the address into your computers internet browser, which in turn will send out a search request through various internet channels. These in turn will eventually locate the server where the website has been hosted and the server will then attempt to display the website on your computers internet browser.
This is website hosting at its simplest but it readily identifies the need for websites to have a good hosting server; because without one, you won't be able to display your websites.
A good website hosting server will offer you many features to make your online experience that much easier, such as having a number of different packages to choose from; having an allotted bandwidth for your website to operate with each month; and having a set amount of space allocated for your website documents and databases to be saved and archived.
